Mozambique Conservation Group meets to discuss 2027 biodiversity strategies

The Conservation Group met in Maputo on September 30, 2026, to discuss the current state of Mozambique’s conservation sector and outline strategic actions for 2027. Chaired by the Secretary of State for Land and Environment, Gustavo Sobrinho Dgedge, the meeting focused on the necessity of effective biodiversity management to improve financial sustainability and revenue collection.

Key topics included strategic reforms to enhance the valuation of natural capital, the assessment and requalification of protected areas, law enforcement actions, and the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict. Participants also addressed the need for private sector financing mechanisms as various external funding projects approach their conclusion.

The forum serves as a collaborative platform for the Mozambican government, the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), the private sector, and non-governmental organizations. Pejul Calenga, Director-General of ANAC, emphasized that the group should evolve beyond a mere accountability mechanism to become an active space for joint problem-solving and information sharing.
