Mozambique corruption: Lawyers suspended over 39 million metical fraud

Mozambique is facing renewed scrutiny regarding public sector integrity following two separate incidents involving financial misconduct.

The Ordem dos Advogados de Moçambique (OAM) has suspended six lawyers for 10 years following the misappropriation of 39 million meticais. The case is linked to the insolvency proceedings of Cimentos da Beira, which began in March 2022. Investigations revealed that the lawyers involved manipulated documents and concealed information to divert funds intended for the company's debts.

Separately, the alleged refusal of a 2 million metical bribe by former official Lino Calau has sparked public debate. While some view the act as a service to the nation, commentators have noted that the refusal does not definitively prove absolute integrity, suggesting the reaction could have been influenced by the specific amount offered relative to larger corruption schemes within the state apparatus.
