Mozambique develops satellite strategy to expand internet access

The Mozambican government, through the National Institute of Communications (INCM), is developing a national strategy titled ‘Internet para Todos’ (Internet for All) to expand digital connectivity across the country. The initiative aims to reduce connectivity gaps, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas, by evaluating the use of satellite technologies.

Helena Fernandes, President of the INCM Board of Directors, stated that the plan focuses on more than just physical coverage; it also addresses connection quality, service costs, equipment access, cybersecurity, and digital literacy. The strategy was developed in collaboration with the government, private sector, academia, and civil society, with technical support from the Global Digital Inclusion Partnership.

To support this transition, the INCM recently held a workshop in Maputo focused on emerging satellite technologies. Supported by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation and Viasat, the event aimed to strengthen local technical capacities and discuss the integration of satellite solutions into the nation's communication infrastructure to drive socioeconomic development in sectors such as health, education, and agriculture.
