Mozambique education officials admit debt to hundreds of teachers

The Mozambique Ministry of Education and Culture has acknowledged a debt owed to hundreds of teachers and trainers from Gaza, Maputo, and Maputo City. The dispute concerns unpaid allowances following a training program held two months ago regarding the introduction of a Moral, Civic, and Patriotic Education discipline.

While teachers claim the total debt exceeds 2.5 million meticais, the Provincial Directorate of Education in Gaza has validated 645 participants. Officials, including Licínio Albino, head of the General Education Department, attributed the payment delays to data inconsistencies, such as errors in bank account numbers and identification digits provided by the beneficiaries.

A significant discrepancy exists regarding the daily rate: the education sector cites a subsidy of 1,800 meticais per day, whereas teachers maintain the agreed amount was 6,000 meticais. Teachers have reported incurring personal debt to cover travel and stay expenses during the training and are demanding a meeting with the Ministry to resolve these tariff differences.
