Mozambique electricity access reaches 66.9% of population

Approximately 22.7 million people in Mozambique, or 66.9% of the population, now have access to electricity. This represents an increase of 12.9 million beneficiaries since 2019, when access was recorded at 9.8 million.

António Manda, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), announced these figures in Maputo during the 49th anniversary celebrations of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). The expansion of the national electrification network is part of a government initiative to achieve universal electricity access by 2030.

Currently, all 11 provincial capitals and 154 district headquarters are electrified, and 361 administrative posts have gained access. Despite this progress, Manda noted that challenges remain, including the need for more resilient infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events and the necessity of transforming energy resources into competitive and sustainable electricity for the country's development.
