Mozambique government addresses human rights crisis in Cabo Delgado

The Mozambican government has formally recognized the urgent need to halt human rights violations and the humanitarian crisis in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. During a press conference addressing recommendations from the United Nations' fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Tuarique Abdala, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional Affairs and Religious Affairs, emphasized the necessity of ending forced displacements that affect thousands of families and minors.

Since armed insurgencies began in 2017, the conflict in Cabo Delgado has resulted in more than 6,600 deaths and displaced over 1.2 million people. Recent data from the International Organization for Migration indicates that at least 4,445 people fled their communities between September and October due to renewed insurgent attacks.

In response to the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Mozambique has accepted 284 of the 292 recommendations provided by 109 delegations. The executive branch has pledged to convert these guidelines into practical measures, including strengthening the rule of law, modernizing the judiciary, and enhancing institutional coordination to protect vulnerable populations.
