Mozambique government rolls out reforms to modernize justice and economy
At a round‑table in Maputo, Justice Minister Mateus Saize said a modern, efficient judiciary is essential for sustainable economic growth, stressing the need to cut case backlogs, digitise services and expand alternative dispute‑resolution mechanisms. He warned that “it is not possible to achieve sustainable economic growth without strong, credible and efficient judicial institutions.”
The Council of Ministers later approved a broad reform package that revises the road traffic code, introduces a points‑based driver licence system, streamlines industrial licensing, revamps telecom licensing and creates a Digital Transformation and Innovation Agency while dissolving the National Science and Technology Parks Company. The measures aim to simplify procedures, improve safety, attract investment and expand the digital economy. The government also confirmed that negotiations continue over the future of Mozal, the country’s large aluminium smelter, whose output remains halted over electricity‑cost disputes.
