Mozambique Government Seeks IMF Deal to Restore Fiscal Stability
The Mozambique government announced on Friday that it expects to finalize talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a new Extended Credit Facility aimed at restoring fiscal stability. In a statement from the Finance Ministry, officials said the IMF mission, which concluded its visit on Friday, presented recommendations focused on "restoring macro‑economic stability" and improving debt sustainability. The government welcomed these recommendations and intends to implement the required reforms promptly.
IMF mission chief Pablo Lopez Murphy noted that the Fund will return to Maputo in the coming months to deepen negotiations and discuss monetary and exchange‑rate policies needed to maintain financial stability and support sustainable growth. The ministry also highlighted that Mozambique recently repaid $700 million of an earlier loan to the IMF using its liquid reserves, demonstrating prudent debt management. The previous Extended Credit Facility, approved in 2022, was suspended in April 2025 after about $343 million had been disbursed.
