Mozambique Governor of Gaza Province Margarida Mapanzene Resigns
Margarida Mapanzene has stepped down as governor of Gaza Province in Mozambique, submitting a resignation letter that cited personal reasons. President Daniel Chapo, speaking as leader of the ruling Frelimo party, said he does not know why she left office and that only she can explain her decision. Frelimo spokesperson Pedro Guiliche described the resignation as a normal procedure under the law and emphasized that any allegations of wrongdoing, including rumours of misappropriated flood‑relief aid, must be investigated by the appropriate authorities. The provincial assembly is now tasked with initiating the process to appoint a successor.
Speculation has emerged that the resignation may be linked to accusations of diversion of humanitarian donations intended for flood victims earlier this year, though the party has denied any direct connection. The incident marks the first time a Gaza governor has resigned since the introduction of elected provincial governors.
