Mozambique IMF mission and AfDB growth forecast shape economic outlook

The International Monetary Fund will send a mission to Mozambique from 8‑12 June, led by Pablo López Murphy, to review recent economic developments and discuss future support. The visit follows Mozambique’s early full repayment of a $698.6 million loan to the IMF, a move the finance ministry says demonstrates prudent debt management and aims to restore market confidence. President Daniel Chapo has indicated expectations for a new IMF support programme during 2025‑26.

The African Development Bank’s annual report projects Mozambique’s GDP growth at 2.1 % in the 2026 fiscal year and 3.5 % in 2027, driven by a recovery in the extractive sector, higher private consumption and investment. Inflation is forecast to ease to around 5.7 %, while the fiscal deficit is expected to widen to 6.4 % of GDP in 2026 and 7.0 % in 2027. Risks highlighted include climate shocks, political instability, the conflict in Cabo Delgado and global trade tensions.
