Mozambique negotiates IMF programme and launches women's empowerment grants

Mozambique is undergoing significant economic shifts involving international cooperation and social empowerment initiatives. An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation is currently in Maputo to conduct technical discussions regarding a potential new Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme. The government aims to finalize this financial assistance programme by the end of 2026 to address structural imbalances and liquidity challenges.

On the social front, President Daniel Chapo announced that approximately 14,000 Mozambican girls will receive 100,000 meticais each in non-reimbursable grants to start businesses. Supported by the World Bank, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote economic autonomy for women and reduce poverty and gender-based violence.

Economically, the Ministry of Finance reported a 1.7% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026, though official growth projections for the full year have been adjusted downward to 0.6%. Challenges remain regarding foreign exchange scarcity, logistics, and access to production inputs.
