Mozambique launches national medicine distribution and traceability measures
Mozambique has launched a nationwide distribution of medicines to replenish health units facing shortages. President Daniel Chapo announced the initiative in response to the destruction of the central medicine warehouse in Maputo, which he characterized as an act of sabotage. The government is working to move supplies from the central depot in Maputo to regional and provincial warehouses to reduce system-wide ruptures.
To further secure the supply chain, the Ministry of Health (MISAU) has introduced traceability seals on medicines and medical supplies. This mechanism is designed to track products through the National Health System to combat theft and diversion. Health Minister Ussene Isse emphasized that the seals will help ensure that supplies, including those supported by the World Bank, reach patients and are properly accounted for by healthcare professionals.
