Mozambique leaders call for anti-corruption culture and stricter penalties

Former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has called for the establishment of a ‘culture of non-corruption’ in the country, emphasizing that combating these practices requires civic and ethical education starting from childhood. Chissano noted that corruption is a long-standing phenomenon in Mozambique and argued that behavioral changes must be instilled in younger generations to ensure long-term integrity.

In a separate discussion regarding the impact of corruption, commentator Artimiza Magaia argued that current prison sentences are insufficient to deter corrupt individuals, as many continue to benefit from diverted funds after serving their time. Magaia advocated for more severe legal sanctions and called on the Assembly of the Republic to pass stricter legislation. She highlighted that the diversion of public resources directly harms essential sectors, such as healthcare, and praised the investigations conducted by the Attorney General's Office and the National Criminal Investigation Service.
