Mozambique MDM accuses government of illegal spending
The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) has accused the government of attempting to legalize expenditures made outside the limits approved by the Assembly of the Republic. This accusation follows a proposed revision to the 2026 Economic, Social and Budgetary Plan (PESOE).
The revision involves incorporating approximately 3.5 billion meticais (roughly 47.4 million euros) from gas revenues and increasing planned expenditures. MDM parliamentary spokesperson Judite Macuacua stated that the party believes the revision aims to “legalize and whiten expenses made by the Government outside the limits established by the Assembly of the Republic, in clear violation of the law.”
In addition to budgetary concerns, the MDM expressed apprehension regarding the state of road infrastructure, noting its impact on economic activity and the cost of living. The Assembly of the Republic recently approved the PESOE revision in general terms with votes from Frelimo, while opposition parties including MDM, Renamo, and PODEMOS voted against the measure.
