Mozambique opposition groups contest police presence and assembly restrictions
Political tensions are rising in Mozambique as opposition groups contest police presence and restrictions on assembly. In Lichinga, the political formation ANAMOLA has accused the Mozambique Police Republic (PRM) of being used as a political tool to block a planned march for its leadership. Authorities reportedly cited security risks and terrorism threats as justification for the ban, a move ANAMOLA claims is an attempt by the ruling FRELIMO party to interfere in political activities ahead of National Peace and Reconciliation Day.
Simultaneously, internal divisions within RENAMO, Mozambique’s second-largest opposition party, have intensified. Members led by Edgar Silva are contesting the presence of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) at party headquarters. The group argues that the police presence hinders normal party activities and complicates efforts to resolve leadership disputes following the 2024 general elections. The dissenting members are calling for a direct dialogue with party president Ossufo Momade and an internal review to address the party’s recent electoral performance.
