Mozambique President announces $75 million for El Niño mitigation

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo conducted a working visit to Gaza Province, focusing on economic development, climate resilience, and social issues. During his visit to the Bilene district, the President announced $75 million in government funding to mitigate the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon on agricultural production, following recent floods and ongoing droughts.

As part of this initiative, the government distributed animal traction kits to producers to bolster food security. Chapo also emphasized the critical role of women in driving the local economy and managing family stability, particularly in regions prone to natural disasters. In meetings with female community leaders, concerns were raised regarding gender-based violence, sexual crimes, and access to essential services like water, energy, and education.

In Mabalane district, the President reviewed the impact of the Local Economic Development Fund (FDEL). He noted that loans provided through the fund have enabled citizens to establish small businesses, such as grocery stores, salons, and restaurants, which contribute to job creation and local income generation.
