Mozambique President Daniel Chapo outlines five‑sector development plan with UN ECA

President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique met with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary Claver Gatete in Maputo for a two‑day high‑level mission. The talks focused on aligning ECA’s technical support with Mozambique’s national development vision, which targets five priority sectors: energy, agriculture, industrialisation, digitalisation and tourism.

Chapo highlighted the country’s ambition to become a regional energy hub, leveraging its hydropower potential, ongoing LNG projects in Cabo Delgado and plans for downstream industries such as fertilizer production. He also stressed the importance of three strategic transport corridors – the Maputo Port corridor, the Zambia‑Zimbabwe link and the Northern Mozambique corridor – to improve connectivity and logistics. Gatete warned that delivery, not planning, is the biggest challenge and urged sustained execution of agreed projects.

The meeting included discussions with senior ministers on agriculture, foreign affairs and planning, reaffirming joint actions to boost human‑capital development and strengthen Africa’s voice in global economic governance.
