Mozambique President proposes mobile-based stock market access
President Daniel Chapo has called for the democratization of Mozambique's capital markets, proposing a digital initiative referred to as ‘Bolsa no Bolso’ (Stock Exchange in your Pocket). The goal is to allow citizens to purchase shares via mobile phones, reducing barriers for small investors located outside major financial centers.
To implement this, Chapo directed the Mozambique Stock Exchange (BVM) to coordinate with the Bank of Mozambique, regulators, financial intermediaries, and telecommunications operators to develop a secure, low-cost technological modernization program. This initiative is intended to be accompanied by financial education programs to help citizens understand investment risks.
During the 28th anniversary of the BVM, Mozambique Electronic Cargo Tracking Services (MECTS) became the first company under the public-private partnership, large-scale projects, and business concessions regime to be admitted to the stock exchange. Chapo emphasized that this admission should serve as a turning point, as only one company has entered the market under this specific legal framework in the 15 years since its approval. He stressed the importance of ensuring national participation in the capital of major economic ventures.
