Mozambique President warns of coercive measures against illegal firearm possession
President Daniel Chapo has announced that the Mozambican state will implement coercive measures against citizens holding illegal firearms once the current amnesty period ends in December. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the XX Special Operations and Reserve Units Course of the Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) in Macandzene, Chapo urged individuals with unregistered, inherited, or purchased weapons to surrender them voluntarily.
Under the “Amnesty II – 2026” operational plan, those who hand in weapons during the amnesty period will not face questioning, detention, or punishment. However, the President warned that after the deadline, the state will proceed with the coercive collection of irregular weaponry to reduce crime and enhance public security.
Additionally, Chapo noted progress in combating kidnappings, stating that the country marked one year without a recorded kidnapping on October 7, a significant milestone given that the country had previously gone approximately 15 years without such a streak.
