Mozambique recognized by WHO as reliable medicine regulator

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated Mozambique as a reliable regulator of medicines and vaccines. The National Medicines Regulatory Authority of Mozambique (Anarme) was awarded Maturity Level 3 (ML3), a classification reserved for regulatory systems that are stable, functional, and integrated.

This distinction indicates that the national authority can perform key oversight functions for medicines and vaccines in accordance with international standards. With this recognition, Mozambique becomes the first Lusophone African country and the tenth on the continent to reach this milestone. This status ensures the authority can evaluate the quality, safety, and efficacy of medical products throughout their entire life cycle.

According to WHO Chief Scientist Sylvie Briand, this achievement is the result of sustained investment in regulatory capacity. The recognition provides greater assurance to the population that available medicines and vaccines meet adequate standards and enhances the ability to detect safety risks, counterfeit products, or substandard goods.
