Mozambique reports 730,000 population returns amid displacement crisis

In Mozambique, over 730,000 people have returned to their places of origin, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This movement reflects progress in returning populations to areas in Cabo Delgado.

Despite these returns, the country recorded 663,769 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in July 2026. This represents a slight 0.3% increase from February 2026, a rise largely attributed to expanded monitoring in Gaza province following heavy rains and flooding during the 2025/2026 rainy season.

Cabo Delgado remains the epicenter of the displacement crisis, accounting for 68% of all identified IDPs due to a nine-year armed insurgency that has resulted in more than 6,600 deaths. While the number of displaced persons in the province fell by 5% compared to previous assessments due to population returns, new displacements continue to occur in certain localities following renewed attacks.
