Inhambane road accident kills 24 people in Mozambique
A violent road accident in the Zavala district of Inhambane province, Mozambique, has resulted in at least 24 deaths. The collision occurred on the N1 highway between a passenger transport vehicle and a MAN Diesel truck belonging to the Mozambique Armed Forces (FADM).
The military vehicle was part of a logistics column traveling toward Inhambane for the upcoming Armed Forces Day celebrations on September 25. In addition to the fatalities, the crash caused significant material damage and left at least two others injured.
National Defense Minister Cristóvão Chume and FADM spokesperson Brigadier-General Omar Nalá Saranga confirmed the incident, stating that authorities and security forces are working to determine the exact causes of the crash. President Daniel Chapo expressed deep condolences to the victims' families and issued a call for motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, including speed limits and sobriety.
This tragedy highlights ongoing road safety challenges in Mozambique, where high accident rates are often attributed to excessive speed, alcohol consumption, and poor infrastructure.
