Mozambique shifts cargo from roads to maritime routes

Mozambique is experiencing a significant shift in its national logistics system as cargo moves from roads to maritime routes. Since April 2025, the national cabotage service has removed the equivalent of approximately 14,000 trucks from the country's highways.

This transition is supported by an increase in the operational maritime fleet, which has grown from two vessels last year to six ships currently in regular operation. Minister of Transport and Logistics João Matlombe noted that major food distributors are leading this change. The expansion focuses on strategic port connections between Maputo, Beira, Nacala, and the Afungi industrial zone, aiming to reduce road infrastructure wear and lower long-distance operational costs.
