Mozambique suspends Constitutional Council vehicle purchase

Mozambique’s Ministry of Finance has suspended the procurement process for the acquisition of four vehicles by the Constitutional Council (CC). The tender, valued at approximately 49.5 million meticais (roughly $175,000), faced intense public backlash and criticism from the opposition Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) party.

Critics argued that the expenditure was disproportionate to the country’s current economic situation, noting that the funds could be better utilized to address shortages of essential medicines in health facilities and infrastructure deficits in schools. Renamo questioned the priority and timing of the purchase given these social needs.

The Functional Procurement Supervision Unit (UFSA), acting under the Ministry of Finance, announced the suspension to investigate indications of practices that may contravene regulations governing public works, the supply of goods, and the management of state assets. UFSA stated the measure will allow for technical supervision and guidance to ensure the process complies with legal and procurement standards.
