Mozambique teachers protest unpaid overtime as President pledges education reforms

On Teacher's Day in Mozambique, the National Association of Teachers (Anapro) expressed deep frustration regarding unpaid overtime and a lack of essential school materials. Spokesperson Marcos Mulima stated that teachers are facing a sense of desperation due to unpaid overtime accumulated since 2022, despite previous government promises. Anapro has requested the Administrative Court to audit public accounts to address these financial discrepancies.

In response, President Daniel Chapo announced the government's commitment to improving the education system. During ceremonies in Maputo, Chapo pledged to invest in school infrastructure, teacher training, and the creation of safe, inclusive learning environments. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges regarding teacher career development and the processing of overtime payments, instructing the Ministry of Education and Culture to develop mechanisms to reward merit and dedication among educators.
