Mozambique to export cassava to China following new trade agreement
Mozambique is preparing to expand its cassava production and processing capabilities to facilitate exports to China. This initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed in Maputo between the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese business group Long Ran.
The agreement aims to mobilize local producers, develop the cassava value chain, and establish conditions for the processing and commercialization of the product. A representative from Long Ran stated that the initial goal is to export one million boxes of cassava, noting that the product has potential uses beyond human consumption, including industrial applications and animal feed.
Long Ran intends to provide Mozambican producers with agricultural knowledge and technology. The group has identified high-potential areas for large-scale production, specifically highlighting the Gaza province and other regions. Lucas Chachine, president of the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce, noted that access to an external market could encourage small-scale farmers to expand cultivation areas, transitioning from subsistence farming to income-generating activities.
