Mozambique launches major road and port infrastructure projects
Mozambique is undertaking major infrastructure investments to enhance its logistics and transport networks. The National Roads Administration (ANE) has awarded €293 million in contracts for road construction and surfacing across the Inhambane and Sofala provinces. This is part of the “Mais Estradas – 2031” programme, a US$2.8 billion national initiative aiming to rehabilitate over 3,000 kilometres of roads by 2031, with full execution expected to begin in early 2027.
Simultaneously, a US$150 million capital dredging project has launched at the Port of Maputo. Supported by DP World and the Maputo Port Development Company, the project will deepen and widen the access channel to accommodate larger vessels up to 366 metres in length. This expansion is intended to strengthen the port’s role as a competitive maritime gateway for Southern Africa, connecting regional markets like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana to global trade routes.
In addition to transport, the government has inaugurated a €1.4 million water supply system in Gorongosa, Sofala province, which has increased local water coverage from 36% to 56%.
