Mozambique Transport Minister announces major road and aviation reforms

Mozambique's Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, has called for significant structural reforms across the nation's transport sectors, focusing on road management and the national airline.

Regarding road infrastructure, Matlombe is pushing for a management overhaul of the National Road Administration (ANE) and the Road Fund (FE). He emphasized the need for a preventive maintenance approach rather than reacting only when degradation becomes critical. As part of this strategy, the government plans to launch the ‘Mais Estradas – 2031’ program. This initiative aims to rehabilitate and expand over 3,000 kilometers of roads over five years, with an estimated investment of $2.8 billion. Public tenders for these projects are currently under evaluation, with work expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

In the aviation sector, the Minister demanded concrete results and strict deadlines for the restructuring of Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM). The government's goal is to ensure the airline's financial sustainability and operational efficiency through better fleet management, cost control, and improved passenger service. Additionally, the government intends to urgently review airfare structures to improve accessibility.
