Mozambique: Two years since Dias and Guambe assassinations

Two years after the assassinations of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe in Maputo, investigations into the killings remain without definitive judicial resolution. Dias, a legal advisor to presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, and Guambe, a national representative for the Podemos party, were shot dead on October 19, 2024, amidst intense contestation of Mozambique's general election results.

Albino Forquilha, president of the Podemos party, honored the victims as “true heroes” of the struggle for electoral truth. He called for comprehensive electoral system reforms and inclusive national dialogue to prevent future political violence and deaths. Forquilha also extended tributes to the families of the more than 400 Mozambicans reported killed following the 2024 elections.

The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) has previously filed complaints with the Attorney General's Office against several individuals, including a prison department official, citing strong evidence of involvement. While authorities have presented various theories, including potential links to organized crime figures, significant progress in the case has yet to be achieved.
