Mozambique weighs holding municipal, legislative and presidential elections on one day
Mozambique’s National Election Commission (CNE) is evaluating a proposal to conduct municipal, legislative and presidential elections on the same date. The plan, outlined in the CNE’s 2027 activity schedule, aims to reduce costs and simplify election logistics, with a projected budget of €12.2 million for election preparation and related activities.
If adopted, the change would require adjustments to the current electoral calendar and possibly constitutional amendments. Mozambique held municipal elections in October 2023 and general elections in October 2024, both of which were followed by contested results, protests and roughly 400 deaths. The CNE intends to discuss the single‑day proposal with political parties, explore the use of information‑technology and artificial‑intelligence tools, and undertake a work visit to Angola to study its permanent voter‑registration system as a potential model.
