Mozambique's CFM to tender rail corridors to private operators
Portos e Caminhos-de-Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), the state-owned ports and railways company, is preparing to launch tenders for the concession of sections of the national railway network to private operators. This initiative aims to diversify freight transport options for importers and exporters by increasing competition among service providers.
The move is part of a broader national strategy to shift cargo movement from road transport to rail and maritime modes, strengthening the country's logistics chain. By opening these corridors to private entities, CFM intends to allow businesses to select operators based on specific service requirements and conditions.
Mozambique's logistics infrastructure relies on three major development corridors: Maputo, Beira, and Nacala. These corridors connect major seaports to the country's interior and neighboring markets. Key lines include the Ressano Garcia Line connecting Maputo to South Africa, the Machipanda and Sena Lines connecting Beira to Zimbabwe and Malawi, and the Nacala Corridor which facilitates coal transport and links to Malawi.
