Mozambique's INCM launches NUTEL App to secure subscriber data

The National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM) has introduced the NUTEL App, a new telecommunications identification tool designed to enhance digital security and streamline subscriber data updates. Unveiled at the 61st Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM), the application aims to replace manual data collection with automated processes.

A key feature of the app is real-time photograph validation, referred to as a ‘proof-of-life’ mechanism, intended to reduce fraud by ensuring registered data matches the actual account holder. This initiative comes as the INCM reports that approximately 25% of mobile network devices in Mozambique are counterfeit.

During a panel discussion, representatives from major mobile operators Tmcel, Vodacom, and Movitel highlighted ongoing challenges regarding identity fraud. Industry officials noted common issues such as individuals registering numbers in their own names only to transfer them to others, and instances where a single person holds multiple SIM cards registered under one identity.
