Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte featured in German opera productions

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera ‘Die Zauberflöte’ (The Magic Flute) is being featured in upcoming productions at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich and the Theater Plauen-Zwickau.

At the Gärtnerplatztheater, the production directed by Josef E. Köpplinger serves as a season premiere. The staging explores themes of transformation, growing up, and the blurred lines between good and evil through the journey of Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno.

The production at Theater Plauen-Zwickau highlights the opera’s nature as a fairy-tale comedy and philosophical teaching piece. The performance emphasizes the work's symbolic elements, including Masonic influences and the recurring importance of the number three, contrasting the virtuoso coloratura of the Queen of the Night with the calm arias of Sarastro.
