Mozilla report examines the reality of Open Source AI and digital privacy

The Mozilla report, ‘The State of Open Source AI’, conducted in collaboration with SlashData, examines the current landscape of artificial intelligence and challenges the marketing rhetoric surrounding ‘open source’ models. The report highlights a distinction between true open source and ‘open weights’ models. While prominent models like Llama, DeepSeek, and Kimi are often marketed as open, none of the 16 leading models analyzed provide the full training data recipe, preventing users from seeing how data was filtered or selected.

Beyond industry infrastructure, technology is increasingly impacting personal privacy and interpersonal relationships. The pervasive nature of smartphones and algorithms creates a ‘digital memory’ that tracks every movement, potentially undermining individual control and privacy. In personal contexts, the ability to constantly monitor locations and digital footprints is noted as a factor that can erode trust and emotional intimacy in relationships, replacing space for forgiveness with absolute digital records.
