Angomcha Bimol Akoijam dismissed from JNU amid sexual harassment allegations

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Congress Member of Parliament representing Inner Manipur, following an internal inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment. The university's Internal Committee recommended major punishment after finding evidence of inappropriate conduct and unwelcome physical contact involving at least 11 female students.

On October 11, 2026, the Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Akoijam at the Vasant Kunj North police station. The FIR, filed following a complaint by the JNU Chief Security Officer, cites several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections related to sexual harassment.

The incident has triggered widespread political protests. The BJP Mahila Morcha has organized demonstrations in multiple cities, including Delhi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Odisha, and Bengaluru, demanding Akoijam's arrest and the resignation of Congress leadership. BJP leaders, including Bansuri Swaraj and Chirag Paswan, have criticized the Congress party for its perceived silence regarding the allegations against its MP.
