Barriere MP petitions federal government for new fire hall funding

Frank Caputo, the Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Nicola, has formally requested federal assistance in the House of Commons to fund a new fire hall for the rural community of Barriere, British Columbia.

The existing fire hall is over 70 years old and no longer meets the operational or training requirements of the district. Alexis Hovenkamp, chief of Barriere Fire Rescue, stated that the community requires between $7 million and $10 million for a new facility. Hovenkamp noted that the local tax base cannot support a project of this scale and highlighted that grant opportunities for critical emergency infrastructure are rare for rural B.C. communities.

Caputo has encouraged the federal government to include funding for the project in the upcoming budget on November 5.
