Helen Haines injured in deliberate vehicle attack in Wangaratta

Independent Australian Federal MP Helen Haines, 65, is in critical but stable condition at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Following emergency surgery, doctors were forced to amputate both of her legs.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a “deliberate act,” noting that the driver’s vehicle performed a U-turn before hitting the lawmaker. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent from Tarrawingee, was apprehended at the scene after a bystander, local barber Ricky Jefferies, intervened and disarmed him.

Nugent appeared in the Wangaratta Magistrates Court facing charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentional injury, and harming a Commonwealth public official. He also faces charges related to the possession and cultivation of cannabis. While police are investigating the motive, the Australian Federal Police have characterized the attack as an “isolated incident” with no known further threats.

Political leaders and community organizations have expressed shock and support for Haines, a former nurse and midwife known for her advocacy in regional health and environmental issues. Her husband, Phil Haines, has requested that donations in her support be directed to Save the Children.
