MP John Brittas allegedly assaulted by police during Delhi protests
Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas was allegedly assaulted by Delhi Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel during protests in New Delhi on Sunday, October 11. The incident occurred at Connaught Place as protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Brittas, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), reported being pinned down and manhandled inside a vehicle by security personnel despite presenting his parliamentary identification. He stated that he was shoved onto a seat and struggled to breathe before a Deputy Commissioner of Police intervened to stop the assault. Brittas was later seen in a distressed state and was reportedly admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.
The detentions took place amid broader demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The CPI(M) accused the Delhi Police of crossing limits, noting that the detentions occurred despite a Supreme Court order barring the detention of peaceful, unarmed protesters.
