MP Jon Pearce urges retailers to stop disposable BBQ sales amid wildfire risk
High Peak MP Jon Pearce has written to major UK retailers asking them to suspend the sale of disposable barbecues, citing a summer of devastating wildfires, including the Dove stone fire that burned moorland on the Saddleworth‑Tameside border.
Pearce notes that several retailers – Co‑op, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, Tesco and Home Bargains – have already stopped stocking disposable BBQs in High Peak stores, and some have agreed to remove them nationwide. He said, “Our campaign in High Peak has shown that retailers are willing to act… By taking disposable BBQs off the shelves, retailers can help reduce the risk of preventable fires this summer,” and called for a government ban on their use in public spaces.
