MP Materials to supply General Motors with magnets by late 2026

MP Materials is advancing its vertical integration strategy by transitioning from rare earth mining to the production of industrial magnet components. The company’s Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas, is preparing for the first commercial deliveries of neodymium-iron-boron magnets to General Motors, which are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Currently, magnet components are undergoing qualification testing in General Motors vehicles following prototype tests at GM’s development center in Pontiac. The Fort Worth plant, spanning 250,000 square feet, is designed with a capacity of up to one million magnets per day, with production currently reserved for General Motors. GM intends to use these magnets in the traction motors of its North American-produced electric vehicles.

The raw materials for this production are sourced from the company’s Mountain Pass mine in California. By establishing domestic metallization and magnet manufacturing, MP Materials aims to close the domestic value chain and reduce reliance on Asian markets for processed rare earth products. Additionally, the company is progressing with the construction of a second magnet factory in Northlake, Texas, to increase annual production capacity to approximately 10,000 metric tons by 2028.
