MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam opposes new liquor outlets in Northern Province
MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, leader of the ITAK Parliamentary Group, has formally opposed the establishment of additional liquor outlets in the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts. Raising questions in Parliament, Rasamanickam cited public objections regarding proposed locations near schools, temples, and residential areas.
The MP urged the government to prioritize economic opportunities and public services in the Northern Province over the expansion of alcohol sales. He also requested transparency regarding 361 liquor licenses reportedly issued during former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s administration in 2024, calling for the disclosure of recommending politicians and beneficiaries.
Furthermore, Rasamanickam highlighted the issue of illicit alcohol production, particularly in Batticaloa, suggesting that high taxes on legal alcohol may be driving consumers toward cheaper, unregulated alternatives. He requested district-wise statistics on illicit alcohol offenses and called for stricter enforcement and tougher penalties for repeat offenders.
