Sobral authorities launch operation against election extortion

Authorities have launched Operação Omertá to investigate a criminal organization, suspected to be the Comando Vermelho, for allegedly interfering in the 2024 and 2026 elections in Sobral, Ceará.

Investigations suggest the group imposed an “election toll” on political candidates. Those without current mandates were reportedly charged approximately R$ 30,000 to campaign in certain neighborhoods, while sitting politicians faced fees of up to R$ 60,000. The group is also accused of using threats and coercion to influence voter choices and cancel political events.

The operation, led by the Integrated Force to Combat Organized Crime (FICCO/CE) and the Electoral Public Ministry, resulted in 14 preventive arrest warrants and 25 search and seizure warrants. Among those arrested are three city councilors: Carlos do Calisto (PSB), Junim do Povo (Podemos), and Mário Vicktor (União).

Additionally, judicial orders included the 180-day suspension of three councilors and two public agents, including a military police officer. The investigation is looking into crimes such as criminal organization, extortion, money laundering, and electoral corruption.
