MPharma association calls for protection of independent pharmacies in Morocco

The MPharma association held its ninth international conference, ‘MPharma Day’, in Rabat to discuss the economic stability and evolving role of independent pharmacies in Morocco. Under the theme ‘The Independent Pharmacy, a Key Link in Public Health’, the event addressed the challenges posed by new drug pricing regulations.

Hasnaa Mamouni, CEO of MPharma, criticized the recent decree on drug pricing, stating it was implemented without sufficient consultation with professionals or measures to support pharmacies through the transition. The association warned against opening pharmacy capital to outside investors or investment chains, emphasizing the need to protect the independence of local pharmacies.

To ensure economic sustainability, MPharma proposed a new professional model where pharmacists’ income is not solely dependent on drug profit margins. This model includes expanding services such as managing chronic diseases, participating in vaccination campaigns, conducting rapid tests, and allowing the substitution of certain medications under regulated conditions.

Key recommendations from the conference included updating the 1922 legal framework governing the profession, organizing regional pharmacist council elections, and adopting a participatory approach with professionals when drafting sector-related decisions.
