Mpho Balopi faces fraud and money laundering charges in Botswana

Mpho Balopi, president of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), has appeared in the Broadhurst Regional Magistrates court facing multiple charges of fraud, money laundering, and attempted obtaining by false pretenses. The charges are linked to funds advanced by the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA).

Prosecutors allege that Balopi, in both his personal capacity and as a director of Native Outdoor (Pty) Ltd and Native Impressions (Pty) Ltd, misrepresented the intended use of P669,842 in February 2023. The funds were reportedly intended for billboard-related works, including cladding and installations, but were allegedly obtained through misrepresentation.

Additionally, Balopi faces separate fraud charges involving Keysource (Pty) Ltd. It is alleged that a loan of P2.89 million was misrepresented as being for the procurement and installation of a digital LED screen system, which was never supplied. The prosecution further alleges an attempt to obtain P1.39 million in December 2023 through false quotations and invoices.

The legal proceedings have triggered internal political scrutiny within the BDP. While BDP Secretary General Kentse Rammidi has maintained that there was no conflict of interest regarding Balopi chairing recent Central Committee meetings that addressed his political future, the case has raised questions regarding party governance and leadership.
