Rio de Janeiro Mpox cases surge as vaccine shortages reported

The state of Rio de Janeiro has recorded 211 confirmed Mpox cases in 2026, surpassing the 119 cases reported throughout all of 2025. In the capital city, 167 cases have been confirmed this year, with a significant spike occurring in recent months: 45 cases were recorded in September and 29 in October, representing a sevenfold increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Health authorities have raised alarms due to a reported lack of vaccine stocks in the capital. While the MVA-BN vaccine is available, it is not part of routine mass immunization and is prioritized for high-risk groups, including people living with HIV/AIDS, laboratory professionals, and those with direct exposure to the virus. Currently, ten patients are hospitalized at the Evandro Chagas National Institute of Infectious Diseases (Fiocruz).

In response to the rising numbers, Brazil’s Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, announced that the federal government is reinforcing the supply of vaccines to Rio de Janeiro to control the current increase and prepare for year-end crowds. However, Padilha stated that the current situation, with 665 total cases in Brazil this year, does not constitute a national outbreak similar to the 2022 surge, which saw nearly 11,000 infections.
