South Africa reports surge in mpox cases, mostly in Western Cape

South Africa is experiencing a rapid rise in mpox cases, with 18 laboratory-confirmed infections and one probable case reported since the start of the year. Health authorities noted that 13 of these cases occurred between 13 August and 17 September, signaling rapid local transmission.

The majority of cases are concentrated in the Western Cape, specifically Cape Town, with 15 infections recorded there. Additional cases were identified in Gauteng (3) and KwaZulu-Natal (1). The affected patients range in age from 23 to 50, with a median age of 36.5. The reported group includes 18 men and one woman.

In response, the South African Border Management Authority has implemented thermal scanning and health declarations at ports of entry to monitor potential imports. One recent case is being tracked following travel to Spain. To assist in controlling the outbreak, the Department of Health has secured limited supplies of the MVA-BN vaccine and Tecovirimat medication with support from the World Health Organization.
