Mpox resurgence: Global cases rise with new variants spreading in Africa and Europe
Mpox is experiencing a resurgence, spreading into new regions and involving various viral variants. According to World Health Organization data, between early 2022 and late May 2026, more than 187,000 confirmed cases and 510 deaths were recorded across 144 countries.
In May alone, 1,844 cases were reported in 34 countries, marking a 24 percent increase from the previous month. Africa remains the most heavily impacted region, accounting for 76 percent of global cases in May. A significant concern is the continued spread of the clade 1b variant, which has established local transmission in both Africa and Europe.
Specific regional developments include a major hotspot in Madagascar, where continuous transmission since December 2025 has resulted in 2,408 cases and 14 deaths as of late June. Additionally, Guinea-Bissau is facing its first mpox epidemic. In the United States, the CDC has indicated that the virus is on a trajectory to become an endemic disease.
