MPRN issues recommendations for Jardim do Seridó and Serra do Mel

The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Norte (MPRN) has issued two distinct recommendations to municipal authorities in the state.

In Jardim do Seridó, the MPRN has recommended emergency structural reforms to the Comissão Dam. Technical inspections by the Institute of Water Management of Rio Grande do Norte (Igarn) identified severe anomalies, including cracks, significant erosion, and deterioration of the spillway. Because the dam owner cited a lack of financial resources, the MPRN has invoked national and state dam safety policies, authorizing the municipality to perform compulsory interventions to prevent a disaster. The city has 60 days to execute the works and must initiate administrative processes to recover the costs from the responsible party.

In Serra do Mel, the MPRN has recommended that the City Hall and the Municipal Chamber increase transparency regarding parliamentary amendments. The authorities have 90 days to restructure their transparency portals to include specific sections detailing the origin, destination, and execution of these funds. The recommendation includes requirements for individual bank accounts for these resources to facilitate tracking and calls for the strengthening of the Internal Control Department to ensure public oversight.
