Mpumalanga workplace inspections intensify to enforce labour laws

The Department of Employment and Labour is conducting a province-wide blitz inspection campaign in Mpumalanga, South Africa, running from 7 to 11 September 2026. The operation covers the Nkangala, Gert Sibande, and Ehlanzeni district municipalities, targeting various business sectors to ensure compliance with national labour legislation.

Inspectors are focusing on two primary areas: the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). BCEA inspections aim to verify statutory requirements such as remuneration, working hours, leave provisions, and employment contracts. Simultaneously, OHSA inspectors are assessing workplace safety measures to ensure employees are protected from hazards.

Provincial Chief Inspector Boikie Mampuru stated that the campaign is a key part of the department’s enforcement mandate to protect workers and promote decent working conditions. The department intends to provide guidance on non-compliance while taking enforcement action against businesses that violate labour laws. This regional effort aligns with broader national initiatives to increase labour enforcement activity across South Africa.
