Márcio Chaer, founder of ConJur, dies after pursuing thief in São Paulo

Márcio Chaer, the 71-year-old founder and executive director of the legal news website Consultor Jurídico (ConJur), died in São Paulo on Saturday, October 3, following a robbery attempt.

According to reports and police information, Chaer was a passenger in a vehicle on Avenida Pedro Vicente near the Armênia Metro station when a suspect stole a mobile phone from one of the occupants. Chaer exited the vehicle to pursue the thief on foot. During the chase, he suffered a sudden medical emergency, believed to be a fatal heart attack, and collapsed on the street.

The death of the prominent legal journalist has drawn tributes from high-ranking Brazilian officials. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva praised Chaer as an “unnegotiable defender of the Democratic Rule of Law,” noting his critical coverage of Operation Lava Jato. Attorney General Jorge Messias and Supreme Court ministers, including Cristiano Zanin and Gilmar Mendes, also expressed profound sadness, highlighting Chaer’s pioneering role in specialized judicial journalism and his significant impact on the Brazilian legal community.
